Product Overview

Coming off the back of the Kahele OC1, Johnny and everyone who tried it just loved the shorter outrigger canoe. It’s packaging, maneuverability, and comfort really differentiated it from previous Puakea Designs OC1 products. But while the Kahele surfs small to medium bumps really well, excels in transitions, and is extremely fast in flat water, in bigger seas Johnny wanted more.

Compared to the Kahele, the Volare is ⅝ inch wider at the waterline, giving it more buoyancy. The waterline is 6 inches shorter compared to the Kahele, but the canoe is 3 inches longer at 19ft 6in. The bow is also taller and sheds water extremely well. All this adds up to a canoe that carries speed on the larger bumps much longer, and will not get pushed around by smaller interference waves. The Volare instead flies over and through the small bump to keep you on the bigger bumps, giving the rider more time to pick and choose which bump to transition onto next.

While almost as fast as the Kahele in outright flat water speed, the waterline is only slightly shorter than it’s smaller counterpart, giving it great glide in between strokes, without slowing down. The Volare is well suited to middle-heavy weight paddlers looking for improved surfing ability or beginners looking for the added stability of a wider OC1. Depending on your paddling style or the water conditions you are looking to excel in, the Volare may just be the right canoe for you.

The most notable difference with the Volare, built by Outrigger Zone, compared to any other OC1 on the market right now is that it has an adjustable foot brace allowing paddlers to move their center of gravity forward or back on the canoe.

Inspiration

We looked at the best parts of the Kahele, and we wanted to design a fuller boat for larger conditions and bigger paddlers without sacrificing flatwater speed. We also wanted to add an adjustable foot brace to this design which has been a long time goal for both John Puakea and Mike Giblin of Outrigger Zone.

Highlights:

  • When compared to the Kahele, the Volare has more volume in the middle, a shorter waterline and a longer length overall.

  • The adjustable foot brace allows riders to move forward or back depending on conditions.

  • Volare, pronounced vo·là·re, means “to fly” in Italian.
